The comfort crochet blanket

For the past two months I have been crocheting away at my simple and plain easy granny square blanket. It has been a lovely distraction during the cold dark and very wet and grey months of January and February. I have found comfort in crocheting this blanket, it has absorbed all my worries, fears, anxieties and concerns that have come my way as well as being a constant big warm comforting hug over my lap as I have joined the squares together.

Each square became a tangled, detailed, specific hooked pray for my loved ones and my fears and hopes for the future. I have received many comforting and blessed answers to some of these prayers so far and believe that the others will be answered when the time is right. The JOY and COMFORT that this blanket has brought can never be underestimated.

So here it is...

Difficult to take a complete photo of it hanging on the line, but hopefully you will get a feeling for it from these pictures (this photo is missing about a quarter of the actual size).

Crocheted in 9 different Stylecraft DK yarn colours, all surrounded by one round of the dark grey Graphite Stylecraft DK colour.

This is the "wrong" side the underside of the blanket, I used Lucy's method to join my squares together and it was a delight to see them grow into rows.

At the end of the day, nothing beats a granny square in my mind when it comes to classic, comforting crochet.

By now, you will probably know that Stylecraft yarn is 100% acrylic as many fellow crocheting bloggers have said. It's also soft, warm and rather squishy and the best of all the acrylics I have encountered. Using this yarn will make washing this blanket easy and it was also affordable to make which I am grateful for as I need to watch my pennies due to a rather HUGE bill of dentistry that I need to undertake in the next 18 months or so.

Thank you so much for visiting, I really love to read your comments and try to visit your blogs too. I am always overwhelmed that you keep coming back to say hi. So, thank you once again xox

I'm back to work tomorrow, alarm clocks back on, Alice still has 2 days off with her papa and then we will be full swing back into routine again. I have loved breaking away from it for a while, I feel suitably refreshed and ready to tackle my work load again.

Wishing you all a fabulous week ahead and see you soon xox

  7. It's beautiful, and those colours are cheery and soothing at the same time. Of course we'd all love to work with natural fibers all the time but who could afford it? Acrylic comes in very handy at times - and it does come in some amazing colours.

So glad you finished your blanket, and that the prayers you poured into its making have poured out in blessing. Have a great week, and I hope your weather behaves itself. :)

  10. Just this weekend I was wondering what a simple granny would look like, with greyish edging instead of black. Now there you go! I like it, this toned-down version of the traditional.

  12. I adore this blanket, such a good idea to use grey, I may steal that idea. These darker months are intended for soul searching easy granny square makes.....an excellent way to make use of your time. And I've found you on Instagram now so I'll be hoping for more crochet sneaky peeks!

  13. I am glad that your blanket making has bought you comfort over the past few weeks, I hope that your need to be comforted has now passed and that things are looking up Penny. I am sure that you will love snuggling under your blanket as it looks really great, and I like the grey that you have used, it really pulls all the colours together very well. xx

  18. Super blanket, Penny, and I think anything like knitting, crochet, or quilting is such a meditative action you can't help but be soothed and comforted. Good luck with your dental work - I am looking forward - if that is the right phrase! to spending rather a lot myself in the next couple of months on essential dental work - the reason for all that pain and swelling last autumn. Ah well, I am lucky enough to be able to scrape the money together - it would have been a different story a few years ago I can tell you!! Lxx

  19. a truly beautiful labour of love. I actually like the 'wrong' side as much as the right. Crochet and knitting is a wonderful way of being able to sit and think or meditate, it should come on prescription for everyone suffering from stress, I think

  20. I think it's beautiful, not just for the colours or pattern but for your words and sentiments. It's true, a granny square can be very relaxing. I'm glad you are feeling rested and refreshed and hope your return to work is going smoothly. x

  23. Oh I am so late at reading this gorgeous post. Oh my I really LOVE this blanket, especially the colours and the way that you chosen to bring them together, the dark grey border always a weakness for me, how can I ever say no to grey, well it is simply impossible. I also love the fact that it has given you such comfort and reassurance during times of worry and concern. I do hope that it is all looking a little perkier now? Oh no to dentists, eeek and huge bills too. It is so hard when there are so few pennies to feed our little hobbies, oh well we can still smile though especially when we admire this gorgeous work of art. Well done you!! PS I am overjoyed that we have been teamed up, now I just need to find that blasted thinking cap, now where did the kids hide it?? xoxoxo
